Team Newsletter | May 8, 2009

Team News

4 weeks and counting until the 2009 MS Ride. At this point I hope everyone has taken the bike out of the closet, dusted the cobwebs off it and have gone on a ride! If you haven't there are still plenty of training opportunities ahead in the coming weeks.

In this week's newsletter you'll find some helpful training advise, a fundraiser update, details about this upcoming weekend's training ride opportunities and of course a chance to meet some of the team in our rider spotlight section. If you have any questions, suggestions or stories to share please don't hesitate to get in touch!

Training Advice | Hydration!

As everyone is preparing for the big ride and focusing on strengthening their legs and fine tuning their bikes, don't forgot about your nutrition and importantly your hydration. A scary fact is that for roughly every 2% of water our body's loose during a workout session we loose about 10% of our performance. Check out this article for some tips and pointers to stay well hydrated during your upcoming workouts and the MS Ride! Click Article

Weekend Training Rides - 5/9 and 5/10

The weather this weekend is looking "iffy" again but that doesn't mean there won't be a break in the foul weather. If you are feeling ambitious this weekend and don't mind getting a little wet there are training opportunities to loosen up the legs.

Ride Option 1 | 4th Annual Team Training Ride hosted by Trail’s End Cycling Company

There will be one rest stop at approximately half way will be stocked with water and sports drinks (thanks to the McCasker family!) Plus, there will be free pizza after the ride!

Ride Option 2 | Revolution Cycle's Sunday Ride

When: Sunday, May 10, 2009. Meet 8:45am Ride 9:00am

Where: Clarendon Store Front

Ride Info: All rider levels. 30 miles round trip to Potomac MD using regular vehicle traffic roads.

Fundraising | 28% to our goal and only 4 weeks left!

Just as a reminder, everyone who is riding is required to raise the minimum $300 in order to ride. So far we are doing good but we need to step it up a notch! With only 4 weeks until the ride we still have plenty of time to fundraise however a little here and a little there goes a long way! If anyone needs tips, suggestions or ideas on how to effectively fundraise you can either utilize the resources available to you on the Participant Center on the MS website or feel free to reach out to me and I will gladly offer some help.

I'd like to call out a recent fundraising effort that was a huge success! On 3/24 and 3/25 Bearingpoint hosted a company March Madness basketball tournament to raise money just for us! The event was a success and brought in $745 to our team! A very special thanks to Andrea Wagenbach, Stephen Robinson and Shailesh Deshpand for making this happen.

Lastly I would like to acknowledge our current top fundraisers. As of 5/8 our 3 top fundraisers on the team are: Stephen Robinson at $700, Rebecca Friedman at $570 and Cherie Jones at $313. Great job guys!

Team Jersey's

Team jerseys have been ordered and will be arriving by 6/2. For those of you that ordered a jersey you can come pick it up at my house anytime after 6/2 or I will be handing them out the morning of the ride. Please contact me for more instructions on picking up and paying for your jersey.

For those of you that missed the jersey order, I have a handful of 2008 jersey's available that I will offer to sell for a reduced price of $55. I have a range of sizes. Please reach out to me if you missed the jersey order but are still interested in getting a team jersey!

Rider Spotlight

Meet Lynn Bulan - Lynn rocks, there is no other way to put it! If you haven't met her yet, you will and you'll wonder why you hadn't done so sooner! Lynn is a 3rd year veteran with OutSPOKEn but that's just the tip of iceberg! Lynn has completed multiple AIDSRides including DC and Montreal/Maine. She completes the oh so crazy and fun RAGBRAI each summer which is a 7 day ride across Iowa with literally 1000's of cyclists! Biking in essence is the life blood that runs through Lynn in fact she has been spotted riding a bike through S. Africa and Zimbabwe while on vacation there last summer.

Aside from biking Lynn can be found scuba diving, paddling/portaging through the Canadian wilderness or working on her recently purchased new home! In order to keep the funds flowing for all her life activities, Lynn is an Appellate Litigator in the Office of the General Counsel at the Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Be sure to say hi to Lynn on the next ride. She always brings a smile to every ride...and a smart ass remark here and there!

Meet Becky Friedman - Becky took up cycling a year ago and is hooked! She is a 2nd year veteran with team OutSPOKEn and has completed 2 MS Rides since she started riding including the DC and the NYC rides! Becky raises money and rides for many reasons including having a best friend who lives with MS.

Becky enjoys many other fun activities outside of cycling including cooking, traveling and playing with her 100+lb dog! Becky is a well traveled person having visited over 20 countries across almost all continents. Antarctica is next on her life travels itinerary!

During the week Becky can be found at her day job as a consultant with ICF where she helps company's navigate their way through organizational changes and much needed employee training and leadership development.

Say hi to Becky on the next training ride. She'll keep a great conversation going if you can keep up with her!

Looking forward to riding with all of you soon!

As always please be safe while training! In the coming weeks I'll include safety and training tips in the team newsletter. Additionally we can "talk shop" at our team rides if anyone has questions.

Aside from cycling Steve loves sailing and is a life long enthusiast. In fact his honeymoon was spent on a 10-day bareboat trip in the Virgin Islands!

Rider Spotlight

Meet Andrea Wagenbach - Andrea is a 3rd year veteran with Team OutSPOKEn and loves cycling! In fact Andrea participated in the AIDS ride a few years back and rode over 400 miles to raise money and awareness for an AIDS cure. Outside of riding Andrea can be found making life easier for her clients by solving complex organizational problems as a manager at Bearingpoint.

Andrea has been a key part of team outspoken from the beginning and will serve as our Bearingpoint sponsor captain this season.

Meet Brian Foley - Brian is also a third year veteran with Team OutSPOKEn. Brian lives for the riding season! He's been known to participate in many riding adventures through the course of the year including Ragbrai a 7 day ride that cuts across Iowa. He too is an AIDS ride alumni. When Brian is not riding he's ensuring that the infrastructure of Fairfax County, including the roads and bridges, are safe and sound. Brian is a civil engineer for Fairfax County.

Brian has been our fearless training leader for the past 2 years and will continue to serve as our training captain this season.

Welcome back...

Welcome back team outspoken! We are entering our third year as an organized friends and family team and this year’s experience is promising to be the best yet! With a new location and a reconfigured 2-day setup, there is a ride option for everyone.

I am going to publish a bi-weekly blog newsletter with all sort of information for everyone. In this newsletter blog you will find key highlights in this section, a section on training tips and advice, fundraising updates/ideas and a rider highlight section. That’s right I am going to highlight one or two riders in each newsletter. If anyone has some ideas, training tips, fundraising ideas or fun facts about themselves please send me an e-mail.

Training
Nice weather is right around the corner but that doesn’t mean you can’t start preparing now to get ready for the big day. Our organized team training rides won’t start until the end of March however if you plan to ride the 30, 60 or 100 mile options in June, your planning and training should start now! Each newsletter I will try to highlight an article or two on training. Check out this short article on training for a century ride.

Fundraising and Team Sponsors
OutSPOKEn is proud to have two very dedicated team sponsors back to support us for the 2009 ride. We have Bearingpoint, Inc who has been with us the whole way and a new sponsor, as of last year, Revolution Cycles. Keep on the lookout for sponsor-supported fundraising opportunities or events as the season progresses.

Rider Spotlight

Meet Ryan...I’m Ryan and I started team OutSPOKEn two years ago with some close friends. I am excited to be part of this team and look forward to the journey we all will take together as we prepare for the ride this year. Aside from Team OutSPOKEn, I spend a lot of time training and racing in triathlons, listening to house/electronica music, traveling and socializing around DC. Oh yeah and I work at AARP as a project manager to help fund these much more important activities. You can reach out to me anytime if you have questions about the ride, training or just want to chat! Each newsletter I am going to highlight 1-2 riders so we all can get a chance to learn about one another!
